Typical morning drive times to Emory and the CDC from 11 nearby areas, transit and bike options, and median home prices to help you choose.

If you work at Emory University, Emory University Hospital or the CDC on Clifton Road, the shortest commutes come from Druid Hills, Decatur, Candler Park, Lake Claire, Kirkwood and Virginia-Highland. Typical weekday morning drives from those neighborhoods run about 7 to 22 minutes, and several of them are close enough that biking is realistic. Areas a little farther out, like Tucker, Avondale Estates and Brookhaven, tend to run about 14 to 45 minutes, and Stone Mountain can reach 50 minutes on a bad morning.

The Clifton Road corridor is one of the largest job centers on Atlanta’s east side. Emory’s campus, Emory University Hospital and the CDC’s headquarters all sit within about a mile of each other. What makes this commute unusual is that there is no highway exit and no MARTA rail station on Clifton Road. Everyone reaches it on surface streets, which means the neighborhood you choose matters more than the distance on a map.

I live in Edgewood, a short drive from Clifton Road, and I work with buyers across Metro Atlanta, including relocation buyers taking jobs in medicine, research and public health who need to choose a neighborhood from out of town.

Typical morning drive times to Emory and the CDC

These are Google’s typical drive times for a weekday departure at 8 a.m. to Emory University Hospital on Clifton Road, checked in October 2026. Each range runs from a good morning to a bad one, and parking at your building can add time. The median sale prices come from the market data on each area page.

The close-in neighborhoods have something going for them beyond the short drive: the range is narrow. Candler Park, Lake Claire and Kirkwood all stay inside about 20 minutes even on a bad morning. Once you move outside I-285 or north toward I-85, the range widens fast, because every route funnels onto a handful of roads like North Decatur Road, Clairmont Road and Briarcliff Road.

Getting to Emory without a car

There is no MARTA rail station on the Clifton Road corridor, but the area is not car-only. MARTA buses connect Emory to nearby rail stations, and Emory runs its own Cliff shuttle system around campus and to some outside stops. Routes and schedules change, so I would check the current maps from MARTA and Emory before you plan your housing search around them.

Biking and walking are real options from the closest neighborhoods. Druid Hills borders campus, and parts of Decatur and Candler Park are within a couple of miles. If that matters to you, I pay close attention to which side of a neighborhood a home sits on, because a quarter mile in the right direction can turn a drive into a walk.

How I would narrow it down

If you want the shortest commute and a classic intown house, Druid Hills, Candler Park and Lake Claire are where I would start. My guides to Druid Hills and Candler Park go deeper on the streets and housing stock.

If you want a walkable downtown and are willing to pay for it, the City of Decatur is the obvious choice for a lot of Emory and CDC buyers. My Decatur guide covers the tradeoffs, and if Decatur’s prices are a stretch, my post on nearby alternatives to the City of Decatur is worth a read.

If you want to keep your price point lower and can live with a 20 to 40 minute drive, Tucker tends to be a good place to start, and Edgewood and Kirkwood offer a shorter drive at a lower median than most of the close-in neighborhoods.
