Where to Live If You Work in Alpharetta: Commute Times and Home Prices for 2026

Typical morning drive times to Alpharetta from 10 areas, including the reverse commute from Midtown, plus median home prices to help you choose.

If you work in Alpharetta, near Avalon, downtown Alpharetta or the Windward Parkway and North Point office corridors, the shortest commutes come from Alpharetta itself, Milton, Roswell and Johns Creek, where a typical weekday morning drive is about 10 to 40 minutes. Cumming and Sandy Springs tend to run about 16 to 30 minutes on GA 400. The commutes that surprise people come from Suwanee, Duluth, East Cobb and Woodstock, which can reach an hour on a bad morning because there is no direct highway between them and Alpharetta.

Alpharetta has become one of the biggest office markets in the metro, with corporate campuses along Windward Parkway, North Point Parkway and Old Milton Parkway, plus a growing number of offices at Avalon and in downtown Alpharetta. A lot of relocation buyers assume they have to live in Alpharetta to work there. That is one option, but the better answer depends on which direction you are coming from and how you feel about GA 400.

I work with buyers across Metro Atlanta, including relocation buyers who are choosing between North Fulton suburbs before they have spent a single morning on GA 400. The numbers below are where I would start.

Typical morning drive times to Alpharetta

These are Google’s typical drive times for a weekday departure at 8 a.m. to Avalon in Alpharetta, checked in October 2026. Each range runs from a good morning to a bad one, and the Windward Parkway corridor sits a few miles north, which can add time from the south and save time from Cumming and Milton. The median sale prices come from the market data on each area page.

The surprise on this list for most people is Cumming. It is farther away than Johns Creek and about as far as Suwanee, but it sits directly on GA 400, so the drive tends to be more predictable. Suwanee and Duluth are the opposite: they look close on a map, but the trip runs across the county on roads like McGinnis Ferry Road and State Bridge Road, and those back up.

The reverse commute from intown

Plenty of people who work in Alpharetta choose to live intown and drive north. The morning traffic on GA 400 is heaviest heading south into the city, so the northbound trip from Midtown can run about 30 to 50 minutes on a typical morning. That is longer than living in North Fulton, but for buyers who want walkability, restaurants and a shorter trip to everything else in the city, it can be a fair trade.

If you are weighing that tradeoff, the MARTA Red Line can help on the intown end. Its northern end is North Springs station in Sandy Springs, which sits near GA 400. MARTA rail does not reach Alpharetta, so you would still need to drive or take a bus for the last stretch.

How I would narrow it down

I would start by asking where you need to be besides work. If your life will mostly happen in North Fulton, then Alpharetta, Milton, Roswell and Johns Creek keep the commute short and keep you close to everything else. My guide to the best North Fulton cities for relocation buyers compares all four side by side, and my guides to moving to Alpharetta and moving to Milton go deeper on each one.

If you want more house for the money, Cumming tends to give you a lower median with a manageable GA 400 commute. If you are looking at East Cobb because of its housing stock, I would drive the route at 8 a.m. before you make an offer, since the range is wide. My post on East Cobb versus Alpharetta covers that choice.

If you are thinking about selling a home in one of these areas as part of a move, my posts on what Roswell homes are worth right now and what Milton homes are worth are a good place to start.
